I have always loved the drama, passion and contrast of lava flowing into water. It is sensual and intimidating yet irresistible and alluring. I studied lava formations and flows extensively when I designed the scenes for the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” Disney ride for Tokyo Disney Sea.
This escape art image is about a story I thought of based on the Hawaiian goddess Pele. I imagined some adventurous young rogue that made a sort of pact with Pele. He would promise his devotion to her and monogamous spirit. She, in turn promises to protect him from mortal harm as he frolics in the sea and lives cradled high above Pele’s volcanic creations.
Note the wicker chair and Mai Tai, where he sits overlooking the horizon and boasts his pompous status. His little shack is forever safe... and he is free to live out his carefree days. As long as he remains loyal, he is protected by Pele’s Promise. -
