  • This nautical art by Tom Thordarson features mermaids and pirates. Thor says of this mermaid artwork, "What little girl has not, at one time in her childhood, dreamed of frolicking about in seas afar? A single mermaid is quite a dose of feminine energy to be respected and reckoned with in every way. Her grace and beauty poised proudly as she swirls her shimmering tail through the lacy foam of the shoreline breakers.

In this painting we witness the lore and enchantment of, not one, but four maidens of the briny blue... and they are having quite a celebration on the beach! We also can see the stunned and baffled expressions of two hopeful pirates whose timing was just a wee off this day. They had heard of this great shipwreck that had happened many moons before and, holding a map to it’s whereabouts, were quite anxious to salvage the promised booty cradled within.

But, as fate would have it, the mermaids got there first! They have claimed this glorious chest of Spanish treasures that they have pulled from the ships tattered hull. They adorn themselves with strings of pearls and jewels and crown themselves all Queens of the Sea! The pirates peep from behind, helpless and bewildered. They dare not draw a sword, for all wise seafaring men know to respect the wondrous powers of the maidens of the depths.

A second underlying story about this painting also exists. It was inspired by a true story of four very enchanting little girls. One of them shared their beautiful story with me. They grew up on the same swim team in Louisiana. They spent endless summers pretending they were real mermaids in the Elk’s Club swimming pool, which for them was a great and wondrous sea. They promised they would one day grow up to be the mermaids they had always imagined. Beautiful young women now, this painting bears their likenesses as they are today. Megan, Amy, Heather and Emily, may you see this and know your little wishes did, indeed, come true. It took only the magic of friendship and a childhood dream."
